AMPHITHEATER AND LIBRARY COMPLEX AIR FORCE ACADEMY TATOI | 2000

The Amphitheatre and Library Complex is part of the new compound of the Hellenic Air Force Academy and covers a total surface of 6.800 sq.m.
The architectural design, mainly: The study avoided the creation of a single, discrete volume and instead chose an articulated composition with a freeform structure and shape. Rhythm and flexibility replaces geometric rigidity.
The peculiar rhythm evident throughout the structure, expressed in the design of the metallic structural elements and in the slanting walls of the edifice, is meant to give the construction its desired lightness.
This rhythm is furthermore enhanced through a “structural sincerity” in the building’s interior, by revealing both the structural network supporting the roof and the cable network supporting the compound’s electromechanical infrastructure.
Linear water elements, lakes and canals, are placed as elements of transition from the artificial environment to the natural surroundings.
